Story
"I've been bounced around,
but I'm still standing up..
I've been so far down,
that my ears they popped.
And it was then I knew,
by all the wrongs you do,
that if you can't be good -be careful!
To achieve your happiness,
on this terrestial ball..
Gotta have clean conscience,
even better: none at all!
But if you can't be good, be careful!"
D-A-D
It had been years. You were older now. The memories of tapped clean water, a warm soft bed and a pay-check landing in your mailbox every month were getting vague and unclear. Back then you were young. Filled with dreams, hope and glad to be alive. Little, if any, could be said about that now. It was all destroyed. All of it, like in a nightmare where things escalate and spiral out of control in minutes... no, seconds! Destroyed in the second those hellish creatures arrived. You couldn't exactly remember when the events occurred and in what order. Everything in these barren outskirts of what once could have been a proud and lively city, had a tendency to slowly erase everything from your mind. Mostly because so much time was spent on defending your mould infected tent from burglars and thieves. Hell, how were you supposed to keep track of time and date when there was no factories anymore producing batteries and watches! Or anything else for that matter. One thing was certain: One man, a soldier, green as the grass that no longer grew on this scorched planet, had once single-handed fought them. He succeeded, and saved us. At least he and many other thought so. The truth was, that no one knew the real story, however something wasn't right about it, because there were still plenty of those foul creatures around.... everywhere... growling and screaming in the dark of night, moving around endlessly searching for a new weak and inattentive human to attack, fighting among themselves. Without any apparent reason. You often took yourself in thinking "Why in God's, if any, name am I still here?" Many had committed suicide. Many families had been destroyed in this way... You knew that the only way to survive was to take care of yourself and not get caught in the middle of anything. Especially not the war, the war which had raged for so long. None of the two armies seemed to get anywhere; they couldn't win, we didn't feel like losing. The best thing you could do if you were hungry or in the mood to end your life was to enlist in the army and you could maybe get so lucky as to get a hot meal and a warm bath before you were sent to your death. The outcome of this war was all about numbers: Which side would have one man standing upright in the end claming the victory.
Changes had occurred in the surrounding world. Nothing looked normal any more. At least not when compared to your blurred memories. Every once in awhile you and your young daughter moved to a new place. Some time ago you arrived here, next to an old UAC factory of sorts which had apparently used the geothermal activities below the earth to produce a toxic product with an even more toxic bi-product as the outcome. It was OK here as a lot of heat emanated through various vents and cracks in the ground outside the factory grounds, and it also seemed as if the number of Hell spawn was significantly smaller here than any other place you'd been. Or maybe they just kept to themselves, because you knew that they had long ago overtaken that factory. The world's environment had changed a lot and it was always cold and the sun couldn’t really penetrate the clouds and thick layer of smog. The atmosphere wasn't the same any more. It was as if the land existed in a constant shift between the darkness of the night and the light of dawn. Although not a particularly safe place it was as good as any. It wasn't until one day, when you were busy looking for food, a scream sliced the cool evening air in two and an Imp took your daughter. Ripped to pieces, blood everywhere... anger took over, rage and insanity flushed through your veins and put you in a state of mind not seen before. The pistol once pried out of the hands of a dead marine probably wouldn't keep you alive for long. But one clip was more than enough. Enough to revenge the loss... the now huge loss. Rectification was the only way now, nothing else mattered. Mother Earth would eventually see the return of a fallen son, but first...Description and important information
Description :
This level is somewhat advanced in terms of navigating around it.
However, the path is rather linear and will relatively fast lead you
around the map its size considdered. There is a lot of switches to
be found, however only in a couple of places do they activate a
remote placed lift, door etc. It is also a relatively long walk from
when you first spot the blue key untill you can actually pick it up.
Again, just follow the path and you will eventually get it.
And please, most of the lava pits are in-escapeable! Do not jump
or fall into them during battle! Now you know, so don't complain
about it when you do, and die...
Problems with ports :
OpenGl mode:
Feel free to use the openGL sourceport GL-Legacy. Though, you
must be aware of the fact that this sourceport generate some odd
things such as floating cages that suddenly stands on pillars of
lava instead of floating freely in the air. There are also some
graphical glitches. GL-Edge, GL-Boom and zDoomGL seems to
run the level perfectly.
Software mode:
A couple of places in Legacy, or maybe just one, some textures
will appear as mis-aligned despite the fact that they are indeed
aligned. Ports such as zDoomBeta, Edge and zDoom 2.0 runs
the level perfectly. PRBoom crashes on my PC so I have not
been able to test the level with that port.
Conclusion:
Don't use JDOOMGL, GL-LEGACY and LEGACY for this level if
you want it to look, appear and play as intended!
Note:
- The sky looks less good when "Strech Short Skies" is turned
ON.
- Please don't use mouselook to shoot-activate secret switches
etc.
- Jumping is NOT intended to be used in this level.
